The Float Base is Here!

Paul, Bryan, and Warren went out to Deseret Transportation this morning to pick up our float base.  Our float base is an old car with the top cut off.  A wooden platform is supported by the frame of the car.  As you can see in the video, the float base can be driven.  We hope it stays that way!

While they could have driven the float base across to the valley back to our neighborhood, they thought it would be better to tow it.  Paul was kind enough to sit in the driver's seat of the float base and steer during during the tow.  It went well and they made good time.

It took a little bit to get the carbureted engine of the old car started.  The mechanic from Deseret Transportation had to give it a few squirts of Ether in the air intake.

Taking a look under the hood.

Artist's Rendition

We are grateful to our talented artists Rock Frampton and Karen Guthrie who were able to transform thoughts and ideas into a sketch that was submitted and approved by the Days of 47 Float Committee.  Here are a couple examples of their work:

Education + Industry = Future Harvest

Our East Mill Creek community was settled in 1848 when the faithful families of John Neff, Alva Keller, and Daniel Russell left the “Old Fort” in downtown Salt Lake City and settled here by a beautiful stream.  They invested in orchards, flour mills, saw mills, and gardens.  The soil was deep and rich.  The land was very productive.  They were able to grow trophy sized apples and needed produce.

As soon as they were able, they built a dedicated school house for their children.  Tuition was often paid with produce.  The “Old Log School House” was built in 1854, 160 years ago this year!  The original school house is blocks away from three fine schools that are within our Stake Boundaries today, namely Upland Terrace Elementary, Wasatch Junior High, and Skyline High School. Historically we have had seven schools built within our Stake Boundaries.

We are very grateful for our “Roots!”  We have a great heritage of forward thinking, hard work, and faithful forefathers who invested in our future.

Getting Started!

Woo hoo!!  We are finally getting started on building our float for the Days of 47 Parade.  We will be picking up the float base this Saturday.

If you are interested in helping out on the float, let us know!
